Did Landa recognise Shoshanna? ›

True to his reputation and nickname, he recognizes Shosanna living an undercover life as a cinema owner four years later, but spares her life again.

Landa didn't see her as a threat or an “enemy of the state”, as she was a young girl with no food, shelter, shoes, and who had just witnessed the murder of her family.

When Shosanna meets Landa as Emmanuelle and he interrogates her about how someone so young owns a cinema, Shosanna explains that it was her aunt (Ada) and uncle's (Jean-Pierre) cinema and she inherited it.

It is French. Au revoir means goodbye, Shoshanna is a female Jewish name.

Shosanna being a young woman owning a cinema and with Marcel working for her surely made Landa suspicious, and ordering the milk and cream were subtle ways in which he was looking to provoke a reaction from her that gave her away.

In the film, Landa is called “The Jew Hunter”, someone who relentlessly hunts down Jewish people. The milk-drinking can be seen as a metaphor for his predatory instincts. Just as a wolf in sheep's clothing hides its true nature, Landa uses his facade of innocence and civility to hunt and capture his prey.

In 'Inglorious Bastards' Landa asks for Shosanna to wait for the Cream to test if she is Jewish. As pastries were made with animal lard (fat) in WW2, the strudel would have been made with (most likely pork) fat. Jews can't drink milk (or cream) and eat meat as it is not kosher. Archived post.

In Inglourious Basterds

Shosanna takes one bite out of the strudel, and agrees that it's good when the colonel asks how was it. She doesn't eat the rest, instead just fiddles a bit with the fork in it. Landa however, eats most of the strudel, and before he departs, he extinguishes his cigarette in the strudel creme.

The look of Shosanna in the final scene is inspired by that of Veronika Voss, character in the 1982 movie of the same name, directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The protagonist of the said film, in turn, was inspired by the figure of Sybille Schmitz, German actress well known at the time of the Third Reich.

Pitt played Lieutenant Aldo Raine in Inglourious Basterds, which is set in 1944. Raine was the leader of the “Basterds”, a group whose sole mission was to kill Nazis. Raine had a large scar around his neck which was supposedly the result of an attempted lynching while fighting the KKK.

Shoshanna is a feminine name of Hebrew origin, meaning “lily.” In the valley of baby names, this gorgeous moniker might just be the fairest one you'll see! In biblical times, the word shoshaná referred to a lily and even appeared at least twice in the Christian Bible as a feminine name.
